We got Netflix last week and I've managed to make good use of it so far...
Nip/Tuck:
South Beach, Miami -- where looking good is a full-time job -- is the setting for Season 1 of this controversial series about plastic surgeons with ethics that often take a back seat to more pressing carnal (and financial) urges. Sean McNamara (Dylan Walsh) and Christian Troy (Julian McMahon) have been partners for years.
I've watched episodes 1-6 of this show so far. It's good. I fast forward through the plastic surgery parts. That's gross.
Love and Other Disasters:
Director Alek Keshishian unspools a charming tale that finds a young American (Brittany Murphy) attempting to play matchmaker for friends and co-workers -- with mixed results -- while interning at a major British fashion magazine. Problem is, she's so busy hooking up everyone else that she can't see her ideal match right under her nose.
I watched this mainly because Brittany Murphy was in it. After watching it it's a shame she died. :( I really liked her in this movie and I really liked the movie too.
Jesus Camp:
This riveting Oscar-nominated documentary offers an unfiltered look at a revivalist subculture in which devout Christian youngsters are being primed to deliver the fundamentalist community's religious and political messages. Building an evangelical army of tomorrow, the Kids on Fire summer camp in Devil's Lake, N.D., is dedicated to deepening the preteens' spirituality and sowing the seeds of political activism.
I could say a lot about this but I don't even know where to start. It is basically a lot of seemingly raw footage from the summer camp. It's definitely not "riveting". And the beliefs that some of these kids have been taught were shocking. I'll give one example: This was said by an 8 or 9 year old girl - she basically said and believes that God is not present in churches that do not worship like an evangelical church does. She believes that you have to worship by yelling and singing and jumping up and down etc... for God to even "want to come to your church". The whole documentary was just weird.
I'm Reed Fish:
A big fish in the little pond of Mud Meadows, Reed Fish (Jay Baruchel) has it all: He hosts a radio show with the mayor (Katey Sagal) and is about to wed the town beauty (Alexis Bledel). But when his high school crush (Schuyler Fisk) resurfaces, he makes choices that throw his life into chaos. DJ Qualls and Chris Parnell are among the colorful characters in this quirky comedy about a small-town love triangle, penned by the real Reed Fish.
I enjoyed this one. It actually had an unexpected ending (kinda) which I didn't expect from a 'chick-flick'
